Year 2: Egg in salt water

In Year 2 we did a little experiment with an egg and a glass of water.  First we put the egg in fresh water and it sunk.  Then we dissolved some salt in the water and when we put the egg back again... it FLOATED!!

Now these are the hypothesis you made:

• the salt does not allow the egg to sink
• the salt occupies a space and does not leave room for the egg
• the salt is heavier than the egg and goes to the bottom although it has dissolved
• the salt holds the egg

Well, you have thought a lot!  And you have the rest of the week to find our more about this.

En 2º hemos hecho un experimento con un huevo y un vaso de agua.  Primero pusimos el huevo en agua y se hundió.  Entonces disolvimos sal en el agua y de nuevo pusimos el huevo.  Esta vez FLOTÓ!!!

Estas son vuestras hipótesis:

• la sal no deja que el huevo se hunda
• la sal ocupa espacio y no deja sitio para el huevo
• la sal es más pesada que el huevo y se va al fondo aunque se ha disuelto
• la sal sujeta al huevo

¡Sois unos grandes pensadores! Tenéis el resto de la semana para investigar más sobre esto.

My little scientists in Year 2

Carmen did an investigation about fresh water and sea water fish and wanted to share it with us.  Thank you, Carmen!  You did a good investigation and you read beautifully!

Carmen hizo una investigación sobre peces de agua dulce y agua salada y ha querido compartirla con nosotros.  ¡Gracias, Carmen!  Hiciste una buena investigación y además lees estupendamente!

We also dissolved different substances in water.  First we had to test the different substances to see what they were.  Soon we found out that we had sugar, salt, cocoa and flour.  Then we dissolved them in water.  The sugar and the salt sank to the bottom and then they seem to disappear.  We know now that they are still there but they have dissolved.  We saw that the water was no longer transparent when we dissolved cocoa and flour.

 Hemos estado disolviendo distintas sustancias en agua.  Primeros las probamos para decidir lo que eran.  Descubrimos que teníamos sal, azúcar, cacao y harina.  Las estuvimos disolviendo en el agua.  El azúcar y la sal se bajaron al fondo del vaso y después "desaparecieron", pero sabemos que siguen en el agua aunque ahora están disueltas.   Vimos que con el cacao y la harina, el agua ya no era transparente.

Homework Year 3

Hello children!

You have a couple of things to do today!
First, you will do two exercises about saving water.  If you choose to do them in English, they are exercises 1 & 2 on page 42 in your English Social Science book.  If you choose to do them in Spanish, they are exercises 1 & 2 on page 52 in your Spanish Social Science book.  I think most of you are ready to do them in English but it's up to you.

After that, my advice is that you revise your notes and exercises on your unit on water.  You will have a little test on Friday 11th March.

Hay un par de cosillas que debéis hacer hoy.
Primero, haréis un par de ejercicios sobre cómo ahorrar agua.  Si elegís hacerlos en inglés, son los ejercicios 1 & 2 de la página 42 de vuestro libro de Social Science.  Si decidís hacerlos en español, son los ejercicios 1 & 2 de la página 52 de vuestro libro de Ciencias Sociales. Creo que la mayoría de vosotros ya estáis preparados para trabajar en inglés, pero haced lo que os parezca mejor.

Después, mi consejo es que repaséis vuestros resúmenes y los ejercicios de esta unidad sobre el agua. Tenéis un pequeño control el viernes 11 de marzo.

Investigation about salt water lakes

Jesus in year 3A shared his lovely poster of salt water lakes.  It's quite complete and he did a great job!  We learnt a lot with it!

Homework Year 3

Hi everyone!
I knew you wouldn't let me down with your investigations about salt water lakes.  Your work is fantastic and I have learnt a lot this morning.  We have found out that there are indeed lakes that have salt water and that there are salt water rivers too.  Sometimes these lakes have more salt than the water in the sea.  Next week we will be publishing all our findings.

This weekend, please read and study about rivers and do the three exercises in the Working with the picture box.  Use the Spanish Social Science book (pages 52/53).

Sabía que no me decepcionaríais con vuestra investigaciones sobre los lagos de agua salada.  Vuestro trabajo es fantástico y he aprendido mucho esta mañana.  Hemos descubierto que realmente sí existen los lagos de agua salada y que también hay ríos salados.  Algunas veces estos lagos tienen más cantidad de sal que el agua del mar.  La próxima semana publicaremos lo que hemos descubierto.

Este fin de semana, por favor leed y estudiad la parte sobre los ríos y haced los ejercicios de la sección "Trabaja con la Imagen" del libro de Ciencias Sociales en español (páginas 52/53).

Hello kiddies!!

There is a lot of work going on in our lessons and I'm very glad to see that many of you are doing a lot of extra work at home to bring to school and share with us.  It's great you do that because your work inspire other classmates and it also inspires me!!!  I'm very grateful for that and I will say that I enjoy enormously learning with you!

For Friday 4th I would like you to work on your investigation about salt water lakes and do the exercises 1, 2 (page 55)  of the Spanish Social Science book about the uses of water.

Lakes usually have fresh water so, do you know if there are any salt water lakes in the world???
You have until Friday 4th March to find out.

Wonderful work in Year 2A

My children in Year 2A have been very busy!!!

Alfonso wrote about the water cycle in Spanish without any help, and reads us his work.  Raúl explains what he knows about the cycle using a model he made at home.  And our first readers feel quite confident to show everyone what they can do in English.

Water cycle minibooks

We have been making little books about the water cycle.  We thought about the front cover and we now know that a good front cover has a title with attractive letters, a picture, and the name of the person who wrote the book: the author.

Hemos estado elaborando pequeños libritos sobre el ciclo del agua.  Pensamos sobre la portada y ahora sabemos que una buena portada debe tener un título con letras atractivas, una imagen y el nombre del autor, que es el que escribe el libro.

We have been reading them with Miss Hind.  Our reading in English is coming along nicely!

Water Cycle model

Amparo in Year 3A made a model of the water cycle last weekend. I'm sure she has learnt a lot and had a lot of fun making it with her family.  The model has also been very useful in class because I have been able to explain the cycle in a more visual way.

Amparo de 3ºA nos ha traído una maqueta del Ciclo del Agua.  Estoy segura de que ha aprendido bastante haciéndola y además se habrá divertido mucho con su familia.  La maqueta además ha sido muy útil en clase porque me ha servido para explicar el ciclo de una forma más visual.

Homework Year 2: The water cycle

Hi Year 2!
You need to do a picture of the water cycle and label it for Monday 9th February.

Label your picture with these words: sea/ocean, sun, evaporation, rain, snow, river, solid water, liquid water and vapour/vapor.

Year 2 Science: Water solutions

We tried dissolving oil, sugar, tea, salt and coffe in hot and cold water.  We found that they dissoved better in hot water.

Then we took some notes and did some pictures to keep a record.
